Marine electrics, batteries and electronics in Malta

Boats in Malta cook their batteries and corrode their connections. A marine electrician traces faults properly, replaces what is tired, labels what is new, and you get the photographs.

What we would check first

We load-test the bank and check the charger settings before you buy batteries. Often it is the charger.

What we do

What we take care of.

  • Fault-findingVoltage-drop and load tests, corrosion traced to its source, intermittent faults found rather than guessed at.
  • Batteries and chargingBanks tested, sized and replaced; chargers, alternators and regulators set up for the chemistry you have; solar where it makes sense.
  • Shore powerInlets, RCDs, earth faults and galvanic isolators. The reason your boat trips the pontoon, found and fixed.
  • Rewiring and panelsTinned marine cable, every circuit fused and labelled, and a drawing left on board so the next person understands it.
  • Lighting and pumpsLED conversions, bilge pumps and float switches, high-water alarms, fans.
  • Instruments and navigationPlotters, AIS, autopilots, wind and depth, and the network that ties them together.
  • Radios and commsVHF and DSC set-up, antennas and cabling, Starlink mounts and power.
  • Corrosion and bondingBonding systems, anodes and isolators checked when anodes disappear faster than they should.

When

The usual jobs, and the months they happen.

Battery replacement

What is involved. Bank load-tested, sized for how you use the boat, replaced, charger settings matched, terminals protected.

When. When the bank stops holding charge. In Malta's heat that is often after four to six summers.

Shore-power fault

What is involved. Inlet, cable, RCD and earth path tested; galvanic isolator fitted where anodes are suffering.

When. The first time it trips. Repeated tripping usually means a leak to earth somewhere on board.

Rewire

What is involved. Old cable stripped out, new tinned cable run, panel rebuilt with labelled fuses and a drawing.

When. When faults keep coming back, or a surveyor flags the wiring.

Electronics fit-out

What is involved. Instruments mounted, networked and calibrated, radios set up with your MMSI, sea trial to check it all talks.

When. Before the season, or when the old plotter dies.

Questions

Questions owners ask first.

Why do my batteries die so fast here?

Heat. A battery locker on a Maltese pontoon in August can sit at 40 °C, and every ten degrees above 25 roughly halves battery life. Ventilation, correct charger settings and not leaving the boat flat all winter help more than buying a more expensive battery.

Is lithium worth it?

For some boats, yes: lighter, more usable capacity and faster charging. It needs the right charger, a battery management system and sometimes alternator protection. We will tell you whether it pays for how you use the boat.

Can you fit Starlink?

Yes: mount, cabling, power supply and a switch so it is not draining the batteries when nobody is aboard.

Do you leave a wiring diagram?

On rewires and new panels, yes. A labelled panel and a drawing on board save the next technician hours, which saves you money.

My insurance survey flagged the wiring. Can you deal with it?

Yes. We fix what the surveyor listed, photograph the work and give you a written summary for the insurer.

Care plans

Never chase this again.

Every care visit records battery voltage and charger state, so a failing bank is caught before it strands you.
