The difference

You see every visit.

Most owners abroad find out how their boat is doing when something has already gone wrong. You get a dated set of photographs after every visit — bilges, batteries, lines, the lot.

Inside a care visit

A washdown, then eight things we look at.

Tap a point on the boat. A care visit is a washdown and a visual check, bow to stern, in this order. The photographs arrive in the same order.

Bilges

A look in the bilges: dry or not, and whether the level has changed since the last visit.

  • 01

    Lines, fenders and chafe

Mooring lines looked over where they rub, fenders in the right place for the forecast. Anything worn is photographed and quoted.

  • 02

    Covers and canvas

Checked for pooling water and worn stitching. A cover holding water is worse than no cover at all.

  • 03

    Deck, hatches and seals

Washed down with fresh water, then looked over: hatches and windows for signs of leaks, teak for lifted seams, drains for blockages.

  • 04

    Bilges

A look in the bilges: dry or not, and whether the level has changed since the last visit.

  • 05

    Batteries and charging

Shore power connected, charger on, terminals clean. Whatever the battery monitor shows is photographed.

  • 06

    Seacocks and hoses

Seacocks (the valves that let seawater in and out) and hoses looked at for corrosion, weeping and loose clips.

  • 07

    Engine bay

A look for leaks, loose belts and anything out of place. Running the engines is an optional extra.

  • 08

    Hull and waterline

Growth at the waterline, seen from the pontoon. Anodes (the sacrificial metal that protects the prop and shaft) and the prop are checked at each haul-out.

Anything that needs work is photographed, quoted and sent to you the same day. Nothing is fixed without your approval.

Prices exclude VAT and depend on boat length. A season plan runs 1 May to 31 October. A full-year plan runs twelve months and costs 10% less than two seasons. Parts, materials, yard fees and berthing are always extra.

Choosing a plan opens the enquiry form with your plan and boat length filled in. Nothing is charged; we confirm the price, start date and how to pay by email.

The Maltese year

A boat here needs different things from one up north.

Nothing freezes, so lay-up is about damp, sun and storms instead. Pick a month to see what we would be doing.

Spring

Haul-out season opens

  • Antifouling and hull polish
  • Anodes and prop checked
  • Seacocks serviced while out of the water

On a care plan we tell you when each of these is due and quote it. Nothing is booked without your say-so. See what a plan covers →

Who you are dealing with

You always deal with the same person.

Stephen Duffy has been a captain for more than 30 years, on all kinds of boats. He has delivered yachts all over the world and used to run a boatyard in Mallorca. He quotes your job, brings in the right technician, checks the work before you are invoiced and sends you the photographs.

The trades are self-employed specialists — marine engineers, electricians, GRP and paint, shipwrights — so you get the person who does that work properly rather than whoever happened to be free.
